How to Double Crochet
Welcome to part 3 in my How To Crochet series! This time, we are talking about double crochet. Like single crochet and half double crochet, this stitch is one of the must know stitches of crochet. Many special stitches and patterns are built off of this stitch, so knowing this stitch automatically broadens the amount of stitches you can learn!
If you read my post on how to do the half double crochet, you will find this stitch is really similar! Like the half double crochet, you start the stitch the same, it is how you continue where it becomes different.
Before we jump into learning the double crochet, let’s talk about material. For practicing a new stitch, I recommend you use either a weight 4 or 5 yarn and the recommended hook on the yarn label. This will ensure that you will be able to see every part of the stitch as you learn it.
Now, let’s learn the double crochet stitch!
First, you will chain two, then yarn over the hook, so there are two loops on the hook.
Next, insert your hook in the stitch.
Yarn over the hook and pull back through the stitch, for 3 loops on the hook.
Yarn over and pull through two loops. You will end with two loops on the hook.
Finally, yarn over and pull through the last two loops on the hook.
Repeat the above steps for more double crochets. The top row in the photo below is double crochets.
And there you have it! You now know how to double crochet! Practice these steps until you have the steps memorized and have a good rhythm for working the stitch.
