Impatiens Granny Square: A Simple Square for Any Occassion
Granny squares are a staple for any crocheter, and I thinks it’s safe to say that we all have a love-hate relationship with them! They are something that can be so satisfying to make, but the simple ones become boring and tedious after a while, no matter how many different colors we use for them. That’s why so many crocheters have created variations of them, some even with different motifs worked into them! I also am no stranger to creating a variation granny square, having created the Solid Spike Stitch Granny Square around this time last year!
If you’ve been following this blog or any of my socials, you may be aware that I have been a bit obsessed recently with a stitch pattern these last few months after designing my Holiday Candy Shawl, having created a few more patterns with the stitch pattern, and am still working on a few more. One of these patterns, the Holiday Candy Face Scrubby, was worked from a circular variation, which got me thinking about other things I can make with that technique. And I did!
Let me introduce, the Impatiens Granny Square! Named for the Impatiens-like shape created from the different colors and the finished square, this is a simple granny square for you to use to make any of your favorite granny square patterns! The full pattern can be found below!
Yarn:
Worsted Weight Yarn
Hook:
J-6.00mm crochet hook
Notes:
Ch 2 does not count as a stitch
Ch 3 does count as a stitch
Instructions in * * are repeated
Instructions in [ ] are worked in one stitch
Impatiens Granny Square Pattern
Rnd 1: MR, ch 2, *dc, hdc* 4 times. Sl st to first st (8 sts)
Rnd 2: Ch 2, [dc, hdc] each st. Sl st to first st (16 sts)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, *[dc, hdc], fpdc*. Repeat * to * 7 more times. Sl st to first st (24 sts)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, *2sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, 2sc*. Repeat * to * 3 more times. Sl st to first st, sl st into the next st. You should now have 4 corners from the ch 2 spaces. (32 sts)
Rnd 5: Ch 3, 2dc, sk 2 sts. *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner. Sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sk 2 sts*. Repeat * to * 1 more time. [3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner. Sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sl st to ch 3.
Rnd 6: Ch 3, turn. 2dc in the space between the 3dc clusters from the previous round 2 times. *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner, 3dc between previous clusters 3 times*. Repeat * to * 2 more times. 3dc between previous 3dc clusters, sl st to first st
You can follow Round 6, adding more 3dc clusters on each side, until you reach your desired size.
