My Favorite Crochet Bag: The Impatiens Granny Square Tote Bag

These last few years, with the growing number of crocheters out there, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of granny squares. That comes with a growing interest in patterns created from granny squares, and there are so many out there! Of course, I just had to join the bandwagon! I have fallen in love with granny square bags lately, and I wanted to design my own. So with my Impatiens Granny Square pattern, I designed my latest pattern: The Impatiens Granny Square Tote Bag! This tote bag is perfect for taking to the beach or market, or even just daily use!

Impatiens Granny Square Tote Bag

Difficulty: Advanced Beginner

Size: Squares: 6.25”x6.25”. Bag 18” tall without straps, 28” with straps

Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn – at least 3 colors. The total yardage is between 650-680.

  • H-5.00mm crochet hook

  • F-4.00mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • Rnd–Round

  • MR–Magic Ring

  • Ch–Chain

  • Dc–Double crochet

  • Hdc–Half double crochet

  • Sl st–Slip stitch

  • St(s)--Stitch(es)

  • Fpdc–Front post double crochet

  • Sc–Single crochet

  • Sk–Skip

  • Blo–Back loop only

  • Extsc–Extended single crochet

  • Sp–Space

  • FO–Finish off

Notes:

  • Pattern is written in US Terminology

  • Instructions in * * are repeated throughout the round

  • Instructions in [ ] are worked in one stitch or chain space

  • Ch 2 does not count as a stitch unless otherwise noted

  • Ch 3 does count as a stitch unless otherwise noted

Special Stitches

  • Extended single crochet: Insert your hook into the stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through one loop. Yarn over and pull through two loops.










Pattern

Squares — Make 13

With H-5.00mm crochet hook

Rnd 1: MR, ch 2, *dc, hdc* 4 times. Sl st to first st (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, [dc, hdc] each st. Sl st to first st (16 sts)

Change Colors

Rnd 3: Ch 2, *[dc, hdc], fpdc*. Repeat * to * 8 times. Sl st to first st (24 sts)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *2sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, 2sc*. Repeat * to * 4 times. Sl st to first st, sl st into the next st. You should now have 4 corners from the ch 2 spaces. (32 sts)

Change Colors

Rnd 5:  Ch 3, 2dc, sk 2 sts. *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner. Sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sk 2 sts*. Repeat * to * 2 times. [3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner. Sk 2 sts, 3dc next st, sl st to ch 3.

Rnd 6: Ch 3, turn. 2dc in the space between the 3dc clusters from the previous round 2 times. *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner, 3dc between previous clusters 3 times*. Repeat * to * 3 times. 3dc between previous 3dc clusters, sl st to ch 3.

Rnd 7: Ch 3, turn. 2dc in the space between the 3dc clusters from the previous round 2 times, 3dc between previous cluster. *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner, 3dc between previous clusters 4 times*. Repeat * to * 3 times. 3dc between previous 3dc clusters 2 times, sl st to ch 3.

Rnd 8: Ch 2, do not turn. Dc 8, *[3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in the corner, dc 18*. Repeat * to * 3 times. Dc 9, sl st to first st. 

Cut yarn, weave in ends




Attaching Squares




Use the lines on the photo as a guide.





Make sure the Right Side of the squares are facing each other, with the Wrong Side facing you. You want the seam to be on the Wrong Side/inside of the bag.


Using F-4.00mm hook, sc blo to attach squares, starting in the corners.

After sewing the squares together, fold the bag along the orange line.



Next, sew the sides together, following the orange lines. Make sure the Right Side of the squares are facing each other, and the Wrong Side is facing you.

Attach yarn at the corners of the squares, then sc blo along the lines, folding the side pieces in to sew together.

Straps

With H-5.00mm hook.

Attach yarn to the top of one of the ch 2 spaces on the right corner.

Round 1: Ch 2, extsc, *extsc 50 (working a stitch in each ch 2 sp at the bottom of the valley), [2extsc, ch 2, 2extsc]*. Repeat * to * 3 more times.

Round 2: Ch 1, *extsc 54, extsc ch 2 sp*. Repeat * to * 3 more times. Sl st to first st.

Round 3: Ch 1, turn, sl st, extsc same st. Turn work back around. Ch 80, sk 54, extsc next st (top of next peak), extsc 55, ch 80, sk 54, extsc next st (top of next peak), extsc 54, sl st to first st. (112 sts, 160 chs)

Rounds 4-7: Ch 2, extsc 272. Sl st to first st (272 sts)

FO. Weave in ends
