Solid Spike Stitch Granny Square

I don’t know about you, but I sometimes get overwhelmed by all the options there are for granny square patterns. There is the traditional granny square, the solid granny square, sunflower granny squares, hexagon granny squares, sunburst granny squares, granny squares with a smiley face, and so many more. Yet, when I was looking for a specific pattern for my yarn from Fangirl Fiber’s Disney Attraction Club, I couldn’t find what I was looking for!

So what was I to do, except make my own? And I did, and figured I should share it with all of you!

Notes

The square I made is a modification of the solid granny square and has spike stitch accents. After the initial set up, the rows alternate between “gap” rows and “solid” rows. The solid rows are what is considered the right side, or the side that should face out. This creates a solid granny square the ends up framed by the spike stitch, keeping that seamless look while adding some texture. To get the full effect, switch yarn colors at least every solid row, if not every row.

The spike stitch is worked into the the stitch below the chain 1 space.

The beginning chain 3 is the first dc of each round.

Materials

For my prototype, I used Caron Simply Soft yarn and a 5mm crochet hook. With 9 rounds, this got me a 9”x9” square.

For a larger square, follow a similar pattern, making sure the gap rounds are a pattern of 2dc, ch 1, sk 1, 2dc, with the ch 1 space always being placed over the previous spike stitch.
