The Stitchionary: How to Crochet the Wrapped Double Crochet

One of the most fun things about crocheting is the opportunity to learn new techniques and stitches. Even though I’ve been crocheting for 8 and 1/2 years, I’m still learning new stitches and techniques constantly! Recently, as I’ve been designing a few new projects, I started using a variation of the double crochet just to see how it looked and fell in love with it! I couldn’t find it anywhere in any of my crochet books, so I took to Google to try and find what it was called. After a few weeks, I finally found it: the Wrapped Double Crochet!

This is such a fun and simple stitch that only uses the double crochet, so it is perfect for even new crocheters to learn! I’ve fallen in love with the way the stitch looks and airy, lacy facade it creates with the fabric without using a ton of chain stitches that you need to keep track of. The stitch itself looks fuller and longer in the fabric, creating such a fun look!

When written in a pattern, it will be abbreviated as wdc for wrapped double crochet. For my patterns, it will always follow a dc, indicating that the wrapped double crochet will be worked around the double crochet just made. For any patterns using a wrapped double crochet, always check the Special Stitches to see if there are any special ways to work it, as there are different variations to this stitch!

How to Crochet the Wrapped Double Crochet

Tip: Work this in multiples of two for easier counting. When working back and forth in rows, always start and end with a double crochet

Step 1: Work a double crochet

Step 2: Yarn over, and move the hook behind the double crochet just made

Step 3: Pull up a loop, and work a double crochet like normal

Step 4: Skip the next stitch

Step 5: Repeat Steps 1-4 until you reach the end of the row

That’s all there is to it! Now you know a simple, fun variation of the double crochet that you can use in virtually any project! I’ll see you guys next month for the next stitch in our Stitchionary series! Until then, Happy Crocheting!
