The Star Ribbon — A How-To on Making the Perfect Ribbon for All Occasions

If you’re like me, you wrap a gift for someone—either in a bag or a box— and you always think that it could use a little something to make it just perfect. Most of the time, it ends up being a bow, but a lot of the time the bows you have never end up being just the right match. Today, I’ve got the perfect pattern for you! This Star Ribbon is perfectly customizable for any and all occasions!

Step 1: Make a chain, being sure to have an odd number of chains. Sc the second chain from the hook before placing a sc in each remaining chain. You will end with an even number of scs. For mine, I made 173 chains, but ended up with 172 scs.

Step 2: Ch 1, then hdc in the first stitch.

Step 3: Now we begin our star stitches. For the first star stitch, insert your hook into the next sc and yarn over and pull through. You should have 2 loops on your hook. Continue doing the same thing with the following stitches until you have a total of 6 loops on your hook. After you have six loops on your hook, yarn over and pull through all 6 loops. Then chain one to finish your star stitch. This makes what is called an “eye” which we will work in.

Step 4: To begin the next star stitch, and all the other star stitches, insert your hook in the eye. Yarn over and pull through so you have 2 loops on your hook.

Step 5: Next, insert your hook between the last two spikes of your previous star stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop for 3 loops on your hook.

Step 6: Now insert your hook in the same stitch the last spike of the previous star stitch was worked in. Yarn over and pull up a loop for 4 loops on your hook.

Step 7: Pull up a loop in each of the next two empty scs so you end up with 6 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops, then chain one to finish your star stitch.

Step 8: Repeat Steps 4-7 across until you have one stitch left. In that last stitch, place 2 hdc.

Step 9: Ch 1, turn. Place 2 sc in each stitch. For the star stitches, work the 2 sc in the eyes.
